Consultation and Screening

We will begin with a free phone consultation to discuss your child’s needs and the needs of your family. Based on your concerns, we will provide a 15-30 minute speech, language, and literacy screener to determine the next best steps for your child.

Assessment

An assessment is typically an hour long. Assessments include formal and informal measures of speech, spoken and non-spoken language, and cognitive-communication. We will assess the following areas:

Articulation – How speech sounds are made. (Children must learn to how to produce the “r” sound in order to say “rabbit” instead of “wabbit.”)

Receptive language – Understanding spoken words by following directions, listening to and understanding a story, and grouping items by category.

Expressive language – Verbally expressing thoughts and ideas by answering questions, telling a story, or using specific vocabulary to describe an item.

Pragmatics – The ability to use language in specific situations. For example, greeting an unfamiliar person, using and understanding humor, taking turns and having an understanding of social rules.

Executive Functioning and Cognition- A set of skills we use everyday to learn, work, and manage daily life. These skills include: attention, memory, organization, planning, time management, task initiation, flexibility, perseverance, and self control.

Voice – Using the vocal folds and breathing to produce sound. Voice is often described by its quality – hoarseness or loss of voice.

Fluency – The rhythm of speech. Hesitations or stuttering can affect fluency.

Reading- A child’s ability to decode words and make meaning from what they are reading. A child will be asked literal and inferential questions about a text.

Writing- Writing sentences, narratives, paragraphs, and essays using complex sentence structures and varied vocabulary.

Treatment

In speech-language therapy, we will use a treatment plan to target specific goals for your child.

  • Playing games, using pictures, and reading books to stimulate language development.

  • Teaching specific reading, writing, and speaking strategies that can be carried over into the classroom.

  • Articulation exercises involve having the therapist model correct sounds and syllables in words and sentences for a child, often during play activities.

  • Working with parents to model play and language skills

  • Reading articles and books to work on decoding and reading comprehension.

  • Writing stories and paragraphs using descriptive vocabulary, sentence strategies, and organizational techniques.

  • Executive functioning skill work and games to enhance attention, memory, organization, planning, time management, task initiation, flexibility, perseverance, and self control.

Language Based Tutoring

We provide language based tutoring services for children who need a boost in the classroom. We will target reading, writing, and executive functioning goals so your child thrives in the classroom. Using our background and training as language experts in conjunction with our knowledge of classroom curriculum and expectations we provide expert tutoring for your learner.

Collaboration

A collaborative approach to therapy and tutoring involves working in partnership with parents, teachers and other professionals.

We frequently set up phone calls and meetings with teachers and other professionals to ensure our goals are aligned and that we are using curricular content.

After sessions we follow up with parents to ensure carryover of skills in all environments.

Remote Learning

At this time we are offering virtual learning sessions with students. We use a variety of online learning platforms to ensure that we are meeting student’s needs. We know that this time is difficult for many learners. We are available to support learners who are having trouble in remote learning environments or who would like extra material to enrich his/her learning.
