12 Fun Writing Activities

  • Fan Mail children can write to someone they admire.  In the past children have written to authors, athletes, and youtubers.  On occasion the celebrity has written back!

  • Letter writing to a pen pal (in another country or at another school or a family member who lives far away)

  • Journal or a diary writing-  Children can journal every day or every few days. Leave this one open and let them write whatever they want.

  • Cookbook - Your child can make a cookbook of their favorite treats. They can use descriptive language such as creamy, tart, salty, and sweet ! One time a child wrote a cook book for dog treats!

  • Comic book- Have your child create unique characters and settings! It is always interesting to see what the villains and heroes do in their comic book.

  • Photo album- Children can make photo albums of trips, family events, their summer, etc.

    • Younger children can make a photo album of members of their families (either drawing or photographs).  They can describe each family member.

  • Newspaper- This is a fun way for your child to write about what is going on at home or write about exciting activities they do (e.g., cooking, sports, legos...whatever they are interested in).

    • They can write a daily newspaper or a weekly newspaper.

    • You can have them read newspapers as examples- look for newspapers/magazines that have kid reporter sections like Sports Illustrated or Washington Post)

  • Persuasive Writing- If a child says can we have ice cream for dessert today?  Have them write a persuasive piece about why they should be allowed to do that activity.  **Make sure if they write a persuasive enough piece you can actually do the activity** :-)

  • Create your own mad libs (fill in the blank) - Have your child write a story and then have them erase some of the words. They can have fun asking each family member to fill in the blank.

  • Poem writing- haiku, color poems, acrostics, etc

  • Put a story to a picture- Give the child a picture and have them write a story about what is happening to the person or people in the picture. What happened? How does the character feel?  What will happen next?

  • How to book- Have you child write a book to teach you how to do something they love. For example, how to do a cartwheel, how to play Pokemon, how to order at Chipotle.
